How To Walk With Confidence

The Goddess Style standing tall blog graphic

A lot of people were taught how to walk as babies aided by their parents. But not many were raised to walk properly. This means poor posture makes it look like one is walking with a slouch.

The Walk

Learning to walk with confidence is really easy to do as it’s a simple technique to learn and adopt quickly. The good thing about learning to walk properly and with confidence is that it’s very important for your physical health too.

A good posture and a good walking posture not only gives you an air of confidence, but it also improves your muscles structure. When the muscles are working harder, you actually burn more calories this way!

It’s actually a win-win situation in my book! That’s why I shared the secret at the end of my tutorial! 😉

If you are not a spring chicken and think is it too late for me to learn? Don’t worry! Not many people were raised in a home that sends their young ones to a deportment class or finishing schools as some call it so it’s never too late to learn a new skill.

Click the link below and let me help you restart to learn to walk properly. Walking with a good posture not only makes you look more confident, but it actually ends up giving you confidence!

(Below is a small gallery of photos with some sample of the postures I highlighted in my tutorial. If you are reading this from a mobile device and it’s blank, click on the space below)

Short Weekend Trip to Amsterdam, For Wedding Romance

14
Cheese! And yes in a cheesy country!

Amsterdam is a city of many things. It’s an international city of many international businesses and people, have amazing art museums, restaurants and yes, famous for their coffee shops! A weekend trip to Amsterdam is the perfect city to break your monotony!

Our reason

Lisa, A dear American expat friend of ours, announced she is going to get married to her soulmate, Scottish Andy. It was a couple of months before this trip in May. The invite came along and I noticed it’s the weekend I would have just been back from a 2 week-long trip to SE Asia.

I hummed and hawed, thinking of the logistics and the physicality of it all. The wedding was a Saturday night and I would have just arrived back in Malaga from an 18-hour flight from Singapore on Thursday late afternoon.

This means that we would have to leave very early on Saturday morning to get to Amsterdam on a decent flight. For some weird reason, I found that flights to Amsterdam are dearer than to other cities in Europe from Malaga.

The trip

It came to be that I had literally a day and a half to spend time with our kids! I ‘sneaked’ off at an ungodly hour out of bed for the 7 AM flight to Amsterdam. That Saturday morning flight was full and I spent the 3 hours sleeping of course!

Arriving in Amsterdam is always like arriving at my other home. I speak fluent Dutch so it’s always a breeze to go through immigration and thereafter. Though I must warn you, for all you ladies because you might get heart palpitations as you walk around Schipol Airport.

Many friends and I swore we have never been to any other country where the police and immigration (Marechaussee) are as tall and as good looking as the Dutchmen (and women)! Hehehe…

Amsterdam the city

Lots of people book a weekend trip to Amsterdam for various reasons. The most ‘famous’ ones are bachelor and bachelorette parties organised from other countries. My hubby was invited to one a long time ago and it was not a quiet one! 😉

The fact is this city is well known for its tolerance of soft drugs and sexual activity and so this has helped with this image as a party central.

There are also people who love Amsterdam because of their art museums. If you somehow missed the news, The Netherlands is where the liks of Van Gogh and Rembrandt and Escher came from. The 2 most famous museums are the Rijks Museum and the van Gogh Museum.

Out Amsterdam

Unfortunately, this trip was way too short for us to spend time indoors. The weather was glorious for early summer/late spring and so we wanted to just walk around the city centre checking out some shops, restaurants and to enjoy the atmosphere.

I was still severely jet-lagged from my Asian trip so this weekend trip to Amsterdam was really pushing my energy. (You can see how tired I am from my eye bags seen in the vlog below 😉 )

I had to take a short kip in our unique Amsterdam lodging before starting our Saturday in Amsterdam. I had to actually push myself out of bed because let’s face it, who goes on a short weekend to sleep right?

Here are some photos of the places and things I see when I was there. Photos were taken over the 2 days I was there. (If you are on mobile and it’s showing blank space, click on it and the photos will come up)

The vlog

If you fancy walking with me around Amsterdam, here’s a short vlog of our weekend trip for love and romance! 😉

Sunday Live Vlog: Come Snorkel From The Beach With Us! Review of Playa La Herradura, Almuñécar, Southern Spain

2

It’s been a while since I last went live on my YouTube channel. I have been so busy most weekends either resting, at a festival or packing up to move and then now unpacking. If you missed it, my last blog was about our recent move to another home. I got super excited to go live with you as we snorkel from the beach here in Southern Spain!

Our Weekend

My eldest daughter is here staying with us for the summer from London. I am keen to show her around more than just the Costa Del Sol region of where we are. Andalusia is such a beautiful part of Spain that it feels remiss if we didn’t explore more.

We’ve been so caught up with our new house and getting the kids ready for school that we haven’t been out much. Ok, the husband has been working really hard too, on getting some clients projects rushed out.

The Beach Life

Our family loves the sea and water activities as some of you may know. I mentioned in the live vlog below that my first holiday with my husband-then-boyfriend was to Bali on a beach and snorkelling vacation. We’ve done many many dives and snorkel together as a family since. Our eldest daughter was first introduced to the deep sea at the tender age of 9 months!

We were on 2 dives in Tioman Island, Malaysia and we had her on the boat with us with a bunch of other divers. The norm is you take a break of at least 45 mins to an hour before your next dive to decompress. (She was in her buggy resting on the boat while we dove.) When we came up for air, we decided to strap her to us with her baby life vest. We fed the fish and she was super excited to see them. She’s been learning to swim since age 3 months and we can see that she loves the sea too.

Beach Snorkel

When we were looking around for different beaches to explore here in Southern Spain, a local friend told us of La Herradura. I was asking her jokingly if there were diving spots locally thinking there was none! She replied that we are lucky as east of Malaga is the spot. We can indeed snorkel and dive from the beach.

2 weekends ago we went there and was blown by the beauty of the bay. We went to the extreme east end of Playa La Herradura, away from the maddening crowd in the middle. There are no shops, no kiosks. Nothing. We brought our own supplies. Unfortunately 2 weeks ago, the wind was strong and so were the waves. It wasn’t a perfect condition for snorkelling but our kids enjoyed it nonetheless.

Gallery of the day below. If on mobile, click on the empty space to see the photos.

This past Sunday was our eldest daughter’s last Sunday before she flies off to Singapore to visit my family. We HAD to bring her with us to see if we can all snorkel from the beach again. Oh boy… weren’t we lucky!

The sea was calm and it looks glassy! The wind was gentle and the water felt so much warmer. I could stand being in it longer than I did 2 weekends ago. Time to snorkel from the beach with the family!

We unpacked all our snorkel/dive gear and set up our camping tent. The air temperature was still very warm and it is a prebble beach, you do feel the heat even more.

It was nice to see a group of divers ahead of us with all their gear spread out too. I asked the divemaster who spoke really good English about the scene underwater. He confirmed what my kids and husband saw before.

I snorkelled with Ayla and together we saw lots of amazing fish, jellyfish and corals. The scene is not as amazing as what I can find in SE Asia but we are nonetheless very happy.

I hope you enjoyed a little snippet of our life here in Spain. I will try to go live more often on a Sunday but of course… I will only go live if there is something exciting to share with you.

New House, New Tour of Our Costa Del Sol Villa

0

Wasn’t it just yesterday that we moved? Showed you around our white, mountainside house with a nice tour? Seems like it right?

I still remember the excitement of recording the walkabout of that other home and sharing the moments with you my dear readers, some of whom are friends and families.

Before the last move

We were exhausted from a hectic move that stretched thousands of kilometres from London to Malaga when we moved into that last home. The exhaustion was exacerbated by the fact that we had to move into 3 different AirBnb lodgings before that.

With 3 children, 2 cats and 1 hamster, let’s just say we took the first house that gave us the very view we had in mind and the pool we were looking for. (I did a house tour of that on the linked blog post). We just wanted to move somewhere!

Things don’t always go according to plan. Sadly…

What happened?

The house turned out to be a nightmare with the landlord letting things slide. We would be emailing him constantly to get things fixed. Things we were promised when we were doing our viewing. When he sent help, it was pretty much the most basic, using companies I wouldn’t have hired personally.

We had no air conditioning in the living-dining room the whole time we were there and termites infestation was another thing. When the temperatures hit over 25C and steadily climbs over the weeks, we were left panting. Being higher up meant that you feel the heat more.

Being in a mountainous and green area also meant we had a big problem with mosquitos this summer. We totally didn’t think about that! (I only thought of mosquitoes when I’m back in Asia!)

We thought of the kids’ welfare

We didn’t realise how allergic our no.2 girl is to mosquito bites. Poor dear is now covered in scars from the bites and the ‘light scratches’ she said she did. Plus she discovered bed bugs in the only bed frame we decided to use that belonged to the landlord. (We have our own full set of furniture shipped over from London)

Another reason for the move was for our children’s education. They were brought one educational year down due to the lack of Spanish language. This also brought its own setbacks. The local village school despite having amazing and caring teachers, couldn’t give them the kind of education they were used to internationally and in London.

The Spanish education system is slightly behind the UK in terms of when a child learns certain subjects. My son, who was doing more complex Maths in Year 3 in London, went back to Year 2 in Spain. He was initially proud of how easy it was for him to do his sums. After a while, the boredom sets in. You should never underestimate how important it is to be mentally stimulated in education.

Our eldest daughter was also very concerned that her siblings were not being challenged academically. We cherished her opinion very much so we listened. After a family discussion and a big dig around in our bank account, it was then decided the 3 children will go back to British international education.

Next step

We started searching for the best school our money can buy. We didn’t want a purely British English school (we are not British after all) as we wanted a more international mix for them. The husband and I eventually settled on one by the coast with good education and holistic programme. (Of course, a good reputation amongst the local hoi-polloi helps!)

We got seriously searching for a home closer to the school once the search was done. Unlike the village Spanish school which was only from 9 am to 2 pm, international schools tend to be from 8:30 am to about 4 pm. We didn’t want to risk driving long during rush hour.

This new place is much bigger, more colourful Andalusian style and very close to the new school. Did I mention I have 2 jacuzzis in this new place? 😉

The Move

This is the ‘easiest’ move I’ve ever done! We arranged a handover with 2 overlapping weeks. This meant that the husband and I managed to drive over all the fragile items in our MPV turned van. Every. Single. Day. It was very tiring but then we saved a ton of money on removal services.

The last weekend in the old house was when we did the ‘big move’. I finally hired a removal van and 2 burly but super careful Spanish guys to move my heavy ticket items. We worked from 10 am to 6 pm.

A month in this new place, we are still settling in. There are still a couple of boxes here and there but much less than we are used to. In our old moves (most internationally) we would still be unpacking boxes 4 or more months into the move.

Next week, the children will finally start in their new school.

I look forward to seeing their new progress and making new parent friends. And of course, enjoying the Costa Del Sol life…

I know a lot of you my dear friends and readers love “House Hunters International”, a house hunting and house tour programme.

Below I’ve linked the video of the house tour I did before we ‘officially’ moved in. Hope you like it!

P.S If you haven’t already, do subscribe to my YouTube channel. I try and upload my vlogs 2x a week. Some vlogs get shared here eventually but if you want fresh content, hit that SUBSCRIBE button!

10 Reasons to Check out Bluedot Festival This Year

10 REASONS TO VISIT BLUEDOT FESTIVAL

With only a few weeks to go until Bluedot Festival, if you’re still thinking about heading to Jodrell Bank from the 18th – 22nd July, it’s not too late to grab some tickets still. With an incredible line-up and a variety of things to do, Bluedot Festival 2019 might just be the best year yet.

Bluedot’s versatile line-up is the perfect place to spend your weekend. Whether you’re looking for something to do with your other half, friends or family here’s why Bluedot Festival shouldn’t be missed…

1. Amazing headliners
This year headliners include Hot Chip, Kraftwerk (who are performing their 3D tour as a UK exclusive and I’m looking forward to the song I linked). 80’s legends New Order (a big hooray from my husband who’s an 80’s boy!), will be closing the festival on Sunday night! Plus tons of other artists and DJ’s set to perform across the weekend.

2. Enjoy fascinating talks with Britain’s First Astronaut
Helen Sharman became the first British Astronaut (AND the FIRST woman on the Mir space station) in May 1991 when she launched on a Russian Soyuz spacecraft. She then spent 8 days orbiting the Earth. In her Dot Talk, she will share her fascinating experience from land to air to space.

There will also be a selection of other talks from Liz Bonnin (TV presenter and biologist), Extinction Rebellion (climate and biodiversity movement) and Professor Jim Al-Khalili (famed TV presenter and physicist).

3. Celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the Moon Landing
Bluedot Festival is all about science and cosmic culture, so there’s nowhere better to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the moon landing than Bluedot itself! There will be various opportunities to celebrate all things space. This includes the chance to stargaze alongside cosmic experts. They will be on hand to guide you through the nights’ sky.

I can assure you watching the planets and stars from a professional telescope is truly amazing! Last year I almost hyperventilated when I got to see the rings of Saturn! Mars was bright red last year during this period.

4. Bluedot’s Sustainabilty Programme
The great thing about Bluedot is their passion for the environment. They’re always working to create a more sustainable space for festival goers. This year they have introduced a new sustainability programme for 2019. All of our wristbands will be made from recycled materials. They’ve also banned single-use plastics and also introduced a cycle scheme where festival attendees can ride their bikes canal side to Jodrell Bank. Hooray to this initiative!

5. Family-friendly Atmosphere
Not only does Bluedot cater to adults, it also caters really well for the little ones! For those aspiring scientists or cosmic explorers, there will be a selection of intergalactic family areas which are full of cool science shows and hands-on activities. This is including the opportunity to make your own waxwork alongside Aardman, the creators of Wallace and Gromit! My children are certainly looking forward to this bit!

They also thoroughly enjoy the many ‘exploding’, slimy, sandy, wacky and fun experiments available throughout these 3 days. For those kids who are into their Minecraft etc, my 2 younger ones love the robotics and coding section.

6. Iconic Setting for a Festival
Bluedot is held in the beautiful location of Jodrell Bank, in Macclesfield. For over 70 years, it has been a world-leading science institute, exploring and understanding the Universe. Who wouldn’t want to dance the night away under the iconic setting of the Lovell telescope, all lighted up in dancing lights?

7. Great Value for Money
Compared to other festivals which I equally love, Bluedot is extremely affordable! Full weekend tickets are priced at £189.25 and children’s weekend tickets start from £27.50. This means it’s a great opportunity to enjoy music, science and exploration activities together as a family.

8. It’s Suitable for Everyone
Whether you’re a lover of science, music or arts and culture, Bluedot festival accommodates everyone. For lively panel discussions, head over to the number of Dot Talks which are led by a number of industry professionals. The talks are so interesting, that queues were snaking around the tent last year!

For live performances, pay a visit to the Contact venue. We’ve had so much fun watching some crazy performers and laughed our bellies out with some comedians. For those looking to get your hands dirty, there’s plenty of interactive science experiments to get involved with. For the music lover, sing your heart out and dance your feet away to some top headliners.

9. Cashless Payments
This year, Bluedot has introduced their BluedotConnect, a cashless alternative to payments at the festival. Your wristband will enable you to pay in all the bars and stalls, as well as being able to log in to DotTalks and performances.

You can also create a bespoke ‘Misson Log’ which will log your entire weekend and content/highlights will be sent to you after the festival, so you can explore beyond the festival weekend. This, I’m looking forward to experiencing as a yearly thing.

10. BBC Sounds as a Partner
Bluedot have announced their partnership with BBC Sounds for the entire weekend. ‘6 Music’ presenters Shaun Keaveny and Radcliffe & Maconie will be bringing their shows to the festival, featuring live music performances, artists interviews and guests hosts.

BBC Education is also attending the festival and will be capturing the careers of people in the music industry for BBC Bitesize. Along with BBC Music Introducing, Bitesize will highlight the many and varied careers on offer in the music industry today.

BBC North West will be filming at Bluedot for an episode of regional current affairs series Inside Out which will celebrate the role Jodrell Bank and the Lovell Telescope played in the historic Apollo Moon Landing 50 years ago. This film will be broadcast on BBC One and BBC iPlayer later in the year.

Bluedot Festival truly is not to be missed this summer! There are still last-minute tickets available which can be purchased at https://www.discoverthebluedot.com

Ar’nie Krogh aka The Goddess Style mum

This festival is where I have camped next to a mental health nurse and a professor of zoology. I have also jostled in the crowd with a green-haired punk, who turned out to be the head engineer for Rolls Royce Aviation engine! I have had many an interesting talk with a rasta-haired, glitter-covered young man who I found out was doing a PhD in quasars and pulsars!

Check out my earlier blog post about my personal experience last year coupled with a YouTube vlog of that fun weekend. Click the link here for 2018 Bluedot Festival with my family.

Here are some pictures from last year to entice you to come join me!

Expat Goddess Reminisces Eid/Hari Raya

0
Today…

The first year being an expat in any new country is always the hardest. No, not when it comes to the excitement of exploring your new city/country but when it comes to celebrations.

Today is a big celebration day for many Muslims around the world. I celebrate what we call Hari Raya Aidilfitri (Eidulfitr’ Celebration Day) in places like Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia and Brunei.

This day marks the end of the month-long obligatory fasting for all Muslims. All Muslims all over the world celebrate this day differently. I really like how we celebrate it in Singapore though, where I grew up.

It is really like how Christmas can be or Chinese New Year’s celebration. Let me picture it for you.

My Memories

I grew up in a large village in Singapore and there were many of us who celebrated this feast. Things haven’t changed much today, except the kids are getting more jaded about the celebration compared to the youths of ‘my time’. As soon as the first day of Ramadan begins, everyone gets really excited about what will happen in 30 days time.

We start by making meals for the breaking of fast (iftar) and then mum would send me out with small bowls (to distribute) of whatever we made to the surrounding neighbours’ homes to share with them. By the end of the night, our meal would consist of 10 different dishes thanks to all the food from the neighbours.

We would start to prepare the house for the new season by painting, making new curtains, baking 10 or so different cookies and then going out to fabric shops to look for that one perfect material to make our family ‘baju kurung’ (literal meaning- containing clothes).

I would painstakingly draw out my special design to the tailor, repeating it a few times to make sure she knows exactly how I want to look like on Raya morning. All the girls and boys tend to wear the same colours/design in the family. So it was really easy to spot the family groups whenever we go out during the celebrating month.

The Big Day for Little Ones

As the big day draws nearer, kids especially would be very excited. There’s the ‘collection’ they can look forward to. The collection is the act of getting money in small packets, kind of like the Chinese Hong Baos (red packets). Money is given out to school going children as part of our zakat (charity).

All kids have to do is just go visiting families and friends houses with their parents or their own schoolmates, have a bite to eat, drink a glass of soda pop then shake the elder’s hand and voila! 😉 A small packet will appear during the said handshake. It’ll inevitably contain at least $2 or if you’re lucky, a larger amount!

When I was growing up, the amounts were much more modest, like 50 cents up to a dollar. I was a ‘champion’ collector, as I loved following my mum all over Singapore and Malaysia. I love visiting families and friends and getting to know them. You can do your collection for the whole month of Syawal!! (the month after Ramadan) I think we are the only ones who celebrate almost the whole month!

The Big Day

The big day of 1st Syawal is preceded by all of us staying awake to bake that last minute cake (mine is Chocolate Marble Cake), hang that newly made curtain, cook the traditional dishes like Beef Rendang (Indonesian Dry Coconut Curry), Lontong (slow cooked rice turned solid-like) and Sayur Lodeh (vegetables cooked in spices and coconut milk) and the ever-present sambal (fried ground chillies in spices).

Abah, my late grandfather would be busy making the last few pieces of ‘ketupat‘ (rice cooked in specially yarned young coconut leaves as pictured below). That’s an art I have yet to master! Some of us would hang more fairy lights to make our house as bright and as festive as possible.

The special food (riced) made from yarned young coconut leaves

In the background, Malay classical and modern music would be blasting from the radio to add to the cacophony of sounds in our house. But the most special sound I look forward to the most is the Taqbir/Takbeer. This is a special prayer/chanting at the end of the last prayer of the day. It sounds so soulful that it never fails to bring tears flowing to my eyes.

This taqbir will continue the next day after the optional Eid prayers. We would then have our family meal that’s been cooking through the night when all the males come home from the mosque,

After the lovely meal has been shared, in our new glorious best clothes, we would then do a special thing that I think is unique to the Muslims in South East Asia.

The kids/younger ones would then sit at the feet of their parents/elders, take their hands, bow their head and seek forgiveness. We seek forgiveness for our transgression for the past year, and there’s a rough formula to say it, translated it goes like this-

“I seek forgiveness from the bottom of my heart, from physical and soul. If I have eaten of yours by mistake or drank from yours by mistake, if I have used language that is rough to hear, please accept my apologies”.

Most of the time, husband and wives would seek forgiveness from each other than the children to those said parents. In general, younger ones would always seek the elders first.

This is also the time when most tears would be spilt. Especially when said sincerely, you do feel that you could have caused hurt to the other party, without realising it. Before life takes us/them away, enforced ‘sorry’ is never a bad thing, don’t you think?

Today

Anyway, back to why I feel that the first years are difficult when it comes to celebrations. You know no one in your surrounding area celebrates your feast the way you do. Heck, they may not even understand it!

Imagine how a Dutch family traditionally exchanges presents on December 5th (Sinterklaas). They then move to China where no one in their surrounding area understands their unique celebration with Sinterklaas and Zwarte Piet.

Everyone thinks, why are you exchanging presents NOT on Christmas Day? Before they can find other Dutch families to share this shared tradition, then they have to make do try to enjoy it with their own little family.

And that’s what I’m doing- I am spending it quietly with my little family in our tiny village here in Alsace. Having just arrived a little more than a month ago, we haven’t made any friends from ‘back home’ or haven’t had the chance to. I do not think it’s so bad that I’m spending my traditional day all ‘alone’.

What I feel is quite sad is that my children do not get much opportunity to experience the traditions I grew up with, the nuances of the culture I am proud of and the company of extended family members.

Of course, my 2 older kids think that by being perpetual expats, we are depriving them not of the traditional day per se but the ability to do ‘collection’!  Sigh…kids today eh?! 🙂

My Essential Travel Packing List for SE Asia

3

I love travelling! My excitement for travel already begins when I plan the trip. It continues as I make the list. It culminates as I pack all items into my suitcase/bags.

Though I wasn’t always this easy excited. No siree … I used to be pretty nervous before any trip. I used to worry that I might forget things. Things I might need or clothes I could have packed.

The more I travel, the more often I used a packing list and the more often I make a habit of it, the better it becomes.

I have discussed with other women, who like me, travel for both work and leisure. I asked them what apps they used (if any) and how they decide what to pack and what are their essentials for their packing list.

Some people used Excel sheets to plan, some used apps (as I mentioned in my video below) and some still use the old fashioned pen and paper.

Whatever you decide to use, here is my own essentials that I MUST have for my travels (back to SE Asia). If you have your own way of planning and travel packing essentials, do let me know in the comment below.

If you are still thinking of travelling somewhere soon, check out a quaint place in Southern Spain where we live. Here you’ll find the most unique an amazing tapas you’ll ever try!

Big Announcement: Rainbow Hair Going, Going, Gone!

Ahh… I can’t believe I’m finally doing this!!

Do you love my colourful, unicorn/rainbow hair?

What if I tell you I’ve made a decision to say goodbye to these crazy colours? Will you still love me tomorrow? ☺️

Well… a decisive decision I’ve made! A month before my birthday. A birthday which number means healing in numerology. I’ve decided to heal my hair and scalp.

I’m putting my health as my priority as always and this means my hair health too. As someone suffering from hypothyroidism, keratin production ain’t so hot in my physical system.

What now you ask?

Well, here’s my latest YouTube vlog explaining what’s happening. Tell me what you think.

19 Secrets To My 20 Years Relationship Happiness

16
Krogh couple toasting on champagne while in a hot tub.
Cheers to the next 19 years sweetheart!

I’m very happy to write this post on the day I celebrate my marriage to my husband on its’ 19th year. Sadly he isn’t by my side today. I’m celebrating in London with our 4 kids and he’s enjoying our proposed sushi dinner at what is our lunch hour.

I still cannot believe I’ve been with him for this long! Like seriously! I feel like he’s my party of life mate and we’ve only just begun. Of course, we’ve been together long, evidenced by our 18-year-old daughter.

Every time I look at our daughter, I had to blink a few times to believe this young lady is now officially an adult! And yet, she has 2 parents who still feel like a youth themselves!

I have decided to share my relationship ‘secrets’ or tips after 20 years of having fun with each other. Not only have we been asked many times what the secret is to our relationship, but also how we stay sane as parents of four.

I’m so lucky to also pick up lots of valuable lessons from various members of my “International Mixed Marriages’ group on Facebook. Many of whom are married for more than 30 or 40 years themselves. I have interviewed a few of them even for my “The Architect of Love” book (available on Amazon).

Also having worked with many singletons, many seems to think that soulmates don’t exist! And that there are some relationship secrets they haven’t been able to crack they think. The truth is, keeping a relationship alive and kicking takes more than just love. It’s hard work but the secrets are easy secrets. 😉

Enjoy my sharing with you.

Bluedot, UK’s Fastest Growing, Family-Friendly Music and STEM Festival

Til 2019! Can't wait!

As some of you, my friends and family know, my family and I are big music and festival fans. Yet we are also a big geeky family. Our eldest daughter was raised more on Discovery channel than Nickelodeon. She was listening to Joy Division more than Britney Spears.

When we moved to England in summer of 2004, the first thing we did was look for a music festival. Alas the major one, Glastonbury, was not to be so we started looking for smaller ones to attend.

Every single year since, we’ve made it a point to go to Glastonbury and one other music festival with our daughter who was then joined by a little sister. These summer festivals are like our family’s yearly retreat. We ‘work hard’ on relaxing our minds with music and the various artistic entertainment yet our bodies are exercised with the tens of thousands of steps a day.

A couple of years ago, we discovered Bluedot by chance on a music site. It was happening in 2 days! Coupled with the interesting music line up, the lower priced entrance fee AND that was it a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) based festival, it didn’t take us long to decide and to snap up the tickets that evening. We set off the next afternoon for Chester.

Our first Bluedot Festival 2017

We had an amazing 3 days filled with wonder and awe. The children learnt about quasars and did robotics and coding. The parents meanwhile, had a grand old time listening and watching various scientists during the day and at night, bands performing and lighting up the stage and the night sky.

Last year was our second year attending Bluedot and we can safely say it’s vying for our ‘favourite festival’ spot with Glastonbury. While Glastonbury is really huge and can be overwhelming for families with small children, Bluedot is the complete opposite.

Bluedot is much smaller, much cleaner and really family oriented. Our 4 children have enjoyed both years we’ve been. Especially for our 2 youngest (8 and 6), Bluedot gives them a chance to discover a fun festival and still feel safe. I love seeing them feel at home at Bluedot like we’ve been going there for ages.

Bluedot to us is quite a unique festival. Where else can you find festivals goers groove to amazing music yet have snaking queues to hear an esteemed scientist, professor and broadcaster like Jim Al Khalili speak?

My happy family with Professor Jim Al Khalili in 2018
Mummy and eldest daughter with Dr Suzie Imber, Planetary Scientist, and the winner of the 2017 BBC Two television program Astronauts, Do You Have What It Takes?

I am super excited to come back again this year to Bluedot. Do you want to know why? Not only am I officially Bluedot’s Ambassador, (a little happy dance here!) we are super excited to see the headlines! And of course, the kids are excited too as they get to do more science and robotics experiments. For our eldest daughter, it’s also extra special as she’s recently been accepted to study Biological Sciences in Imperial College (of Science, Technology and Medicine). I guess all those years of us geeking out with her has helped tremendously. 🙂

Bluedot 2019 Line Up

As you can see from the line up, Kraftwerk is going to be present in their 3D glory and New Order will also be the order of the day (pun intended). If you are not so much into music, there are various stages to hook your attention. This year is also the 50th anniversary of the moon landing (1969) and Bluedot, being based at Jodrell Bank Observatory, will be celebrating along.

On the 21 July 1969 humankind began a brand new chapter in the history of science and exploration as Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin set foot on the Moon. The iconic Jodrell Bank in Cheshire played a unique role in tracking the Eagle Lander onto the surface.

To celebrate 50 years to the day, we have announced the first phase of our incredible Moon-themed line-up to mark one of the most momentous feats in the history of human endeavour.

Throughout the weekend Bluedot will relive the Apollo 11 mission in real time with The Moon Landing LIVE using archive audio and video. Festival goers will be able to follow along including all the key moments of entering lunar orbit, the Eagle landing on the Moon and Armstrong’s one small step.

I really would love to have you check out Bluedot Festival if you are a festival virgin and want to be eased in. There will be no tales of ‘smelly toilets’, staggering drunken teens or drugged out souls wandering around. What you will find is a bunch of beautiful souls, many from the STEM line (hmm, I wonder why? ?) clean open spaces and lots of things to learn to bring you forward into an exciting future. We’ve met incredibly friendly and helpful tent neighbours and helpful scientists willing to answer our questions. What about when it comes to music? No smelly pits jostling for space with you right up front! LOL.. how much more incredible can it be right?

So go on then, check out the link below to see what you’ll be missing if you don’t join me!

The Difference Between a Cold and Flu – My Experience

9

I was planning on another beauty vlog/blog for this week but then last week I got ill. Very, very ill that all plans were scuppered and energy went out the window.

I was talking to a couple of old friends from SE Asia who were messaging me about my Facebook post on being ill. As one does, I sent out an “SOS” post on FB feeling a little sorry for myself being ill while the husband was away.

It became clear to me that many people I spoke to didn’t really realise that even though the cold and flu are both caused by viruses, they are 2 completely different viri. They both present similar symptoms to each other with some subtle yet major differences.

Since I had a cold in October last year when I was in Frankfurt and now I am down with the flu, I decided to film the symptom differences and how I felt on Day 5 of my illness. Here I am in my sniffly glory.

Below is a handy guide if you have no time to watch my vlog but want to quickly scan for visual clues.

My Evening Cleansing and Anti-Ageing Skincare Routine

9

As someone who regularly posts many photos of herself on social media platforms, mostly with makeup on, I do get asked about my cosmetics as well as my skincare and anti-ageing routine.

If you missed the news, our skin starts ageing from around the age of 25. Yup.. that young! I guess evolution hasn’t caught up with us. and 25 years old used to be middle age for thousands of our human years. So what do we need to do to hold on to the years?

My early story

One thing my mum has drilled in me from a very young age is to always look after my skin. And not just the skin on my face. I remember being only about 6 when these lessons started. She was a bridal make up artist on weekends so her work was beautifying women. I was her very young and enthusiastic assistant. One of the things her generation of Indonesian makeup artists did was to give every bride a good facial before their big weekend. Yes, in my culture, our wedding dos last a whole long weekend!

I remember her giving every bride a loving cleanse and plucking of stray hairs on the Friday evening of their big day. Many of them were hard-working women who have barely been to a salon in their lives. These memories may not have made me want to be a makeup artist, but it did one thing. It has reinforced in me the need to look after my skin. That’s the only one I have for life.

I think I spend more money on skincare than I do cosmetics! I am not keen to pay more than £24 for a designer lipstick no matter how much fancy ingredients they claim to have. Yet I am perfectly happy to splash £25 for a bottle of cleansing water. (This is what I had done last year skincare wise)

When I married my husband I was so happy to know that my (now late) FIL is a pharmacologist specialising in dermatology. He has created a few skincare potions for some well-known brands especially for people with dermatology issues (like eczema and psoriasis). I used to get approached by lots of MLM companies claiming that their products were the bee’s knees. I will almost always ask for the disclosure of the full ingredients. This was the time when full ingredients lists were not necessary on the box). I’ll then send it on to my FIL. He would tell me how much it costs to put this particular lotion or cream together and what it’s actual efficacy will be.

Fast forward to today

I always religiously read the full ingredients lists. I am pretty much familiar with most chemicals and those I don’t, I will quickly google them while shopping (thank God for high-speed 4G eh?). So it’s up to me now to either accept one or two dodgy ingredients or go for as much natural as possible.

My anti-ageing gig today

This video is my nightly anti-ageing routine which differs slightly from my daily routine. Instead of a vigorous anti-ageing massage, I do a more relaxing-ready-for-bed massage. As you can see, my skincare doesn’t cost a bomb. It’s suitable for someone in her 20’s or in her 40’s like me.

Kitchen Hack: Whisking Cream With a Single Lego

0

During this Christmas last, as per the norm, our household always makes Danish Juleaften (or Yule evening/Xmas eve) meal. This ends with the rice and almond pudding drizzled in warm cherry sauce. This is called ‘ris a lamande’ in Danish.

Unfortunately for us, with this recent international move from London to Malaga, we can’t seem to find our electric whisk. I can’t remember if we had given it to our daughter or if it was in another box of kitchen wares in storage.

Oh oh…?

Wherever it was, it meant that we panicked slightly wondering how we were going to whisk 1 litre of cream into whipped cream for the dessert. The only handheld whisk we had in the kitchen was a tiny one for a small serving of sauces.

We had a smaller one

What now?

“Ah-ha….!” said the husband as he produced a small piece of Lego, washed it and stuck it into a Ziploc bag.

I asked him what he was doing with a piece of our kids’ toys. He told me he got this tip from his sister some time ago and he suddenly remembered it!

If you ever find yourself on a camping trip and reeeeaaallly would love to have whipped cream on top of that fireside hot chocolate (which I assume will come with a few pieces of marshmallow)…

Haven’t got an electric whisk at hand or the large handheld whish or even a large bowl? Then you fret not! Simple kitchen hack to the rescue!

Just make sure you pack a piece of 8 dotted Lego and a medium-sized Ziplock bag! (Make sure it’s a good quality one as you can see why in the video! ?)

Please watch our simple kitchen hack which I realised now is also perfect for making Eton Mess on holiday without a whisk! 😉

Have you got any other kitchen hacks I can use with my Legos? Please let me know in your comments below. I would LOVE to hear your tips!

How I Maintain and Manage My Rainbow Hair

0

Having had my colourful hair now for almost 2.5 years has meant a lot of time spent taking good care of it. I have had to relearn certain things about hair care and maintenance especially in regards to bleached hair.

When I meet new people, naturally they are attracted to my crazy colours, be it in a good or bad way. Generally most people are genuinely intrigued and want to touch it and ask more questions.

Many even told me they wished they had the guts to have even a sliver of pink or blue or dark purple somewhere but somehow ‘society’s judgements’ stopped them from committing this artistic pursuit.

After many questions asked on the colours I used and how I maintain it, here’s my latest YouTube video with me sharing all my ‘secrets’.

Below are the products I mentioned in my video. These are affiliate links. It doesn’t cost you anything to click through to Amazon from here, though it means a lot to me. I might get tiny funding to keep my blog going. Happy window shopping!

How to Get A Stronger and Flexible Upper Body with Chest Slides The Belly Goddess Dance Way

This is the next instalment of my Funky Friday dance tutorial. It’s all about the chest and upper body. A lot of people are very stiff up here as they tend to slouch all day in front of the computer. This is an excellent move to unblock tight chest and develop stronger core at the same time.

I hope you like this simple move and if you haven’t already, check out my other tips in this series. www.youtube.com/TheGoddessStyle

I know everyone’s talking about New Year’s Resolutions, new year changes, yadda, yadda, yadda… and I’m not those type of person.

I hate the words “New Year’s resolutions” as those goals made have been shown to fail 80% of the time by the end of the first quarter. As a life coach-therapist, I work with clients to affect positive life-long changes. Those changes can happen anytime, and only when you are ready.

Assuming you are excited to make changes for 2019 from the beginning of this year, these are my first 3 tips. They are so simple to do and highly achievable. I can also promise you, the joy they bring is immense.

So if you haven’t already, click on the link below and spend 10 mins with me going through the tips I myself keep as a reminder.

Have a great day and kisses to all.

Blogmas Day 13/14: How to Work Those Hips Dance Tutorial

0

Everyone it seems is always mesmerised by Shakira’s music and even more her dancing skills. Her hips truly don’t lie right? 😉

Every time I teach a class, I always get asked if I can show how she does her ‘thing’. She has lots of ‘things’ that are so special so here is one of them.

A lot of belly dancing moves involve the hips, rightfully so, as it’s the centre of our gravity. And in the case of my Belly Goddess Dance Therapy, it’s always about igniting the ‘kundalini’ or the base chakra. It’s like lighting the main furnace in order to get everything going in the house.

Enjoy this little tutorial and the short demo dance with Shakira’s music.

The First Path to Your Goddessness

0

Ihave been asked many times what does it mean to be a Goddess and how does one achieve it?

Working with women and empowering them over 23 years have taught me that many women don’t realise how powerful their feminine energy is. This is why I totally enjoy doing what I do.

Having taken a long break from doing this work when I moved to London (I was pursuing my other professional channels of work) I do miss working with women in this avenue and the many laughters we have while learning.

So here’s a simple video to give you an idea of the beginning of that path and the journey to you discovering your inner goddess.

Simple Hack to be Happy & Positive Instantly

0

For many of us consuming digital information these days, it’s hard not to notice that there’s more negative news than there are positive. You have to look really hard to find that snippet of happy, sunshiney nugget of positivity.

It’s no wonder that many young people today admitted they are easily depressed and feel low more than they feel high. So is there a way out easily?

Besides stopping reading the (mainly negative) news completely, how about doing something easy enough to turn your world upside down? Literally?

Here’s my simple trick which I’ve used every. single. day to be happy, no matter how s**te I feel that morning.

Once you’ve practised this hack for at least 2 weeks, (every day), come back here and tell me the difference it’s made to you. I would love to hear what you think!

After lots of wonderment at a small clip I shared on my Instagram account and my Facebook profile, of the sunrise we saw on our first Saturday, words of encouragement were sent my way to show more. With my husband’s blessing, I did a walkabout of my house while we are still in a just-moved-in condition.

If you’ll excuse the mess and the boxes and the totally ‘bare’ look, here it is. Hope you enjoy it and that you’ll appreciate the view as much as we do.

How Your Tongue Can Help You Stay “Young” and Healthy

0

So many products are being produced out there, touted to help you in keeping ageing at bay. From Botox to dermal massage rollers to facelifts. SO many are scarily invasive and can be dangerous.

Reading by chance an article on Daily Mail about ageing and the ancient art of tongue scraping, got me all excited to share with you my thoughts. I’ve been doing this for ages and very happy to share with you my own experience.

Learning Languages: Speak Spanish in Spain the Andalusian Way

9

As many of you know, I love learning new languages! I am counting about 11 languages that I have learnt and/or speak fluently. This doesn’t include me picking up American Sign Language in my late teens as one of my best buddies in Singapore was hearing and talking impaired.

How it started

I started learning Spanish many years ago out of interest in one of the world’s most used languages. It also helps that many of the languages I learnt were borne out of my interest in food. Latin American food has always interested me. Therefore it was natural for me to want to learn their language. Due to the Spanish colonisation hundreds of years ago, the Spanish language is widely spoken in South America

Many of the books available to buy then were mainly from the US. I bought Spanish for Dummies, which was written for the US market and subsequently listened to CDs with pronunciations that were used in those regions.

You would think Spanish is Spanish right?

Just like spoken and written English, there are massive variations. Think between English in the UK compared to American English and Jamaican English. They are all correct in their own terms.

Moving to Europe years ago meant that I became familiar with Spanish from Spain though I thought all Spaniards spoke with a lisp! Now I understood it as a Barcelona ‘quirk’. ?

I am getting familiarised again with speaking Spanish since we moved to Southern Spain 3 weeks ago. FYI, I find it harder to learn a new language when you’re not fully immersed in the culture and get to speak it often.

Here’s my explanation of what I find to be ‘cute’ differences and if you ever want to come visit me, here’s what you need to know about trying out the ‘local’ language. 😉

If you are now curious about the way of life in Andalusia, come check out this blog post! Step inside what a typical whitewashed village home looks like!

Best Children’s Books for Stylish Mamas. Review of “My Mummy Loves” Book Series

1

When I first chanced upon Brit Claire Grove’s Instagram page, I was so attracted to her beautiful profile. She had her work for different magazines on display and also her stylish OOTDs and her life in New Zealand to tease us.

I commented on her photos and was so pleased to see her replying sincerely. When she posted about the children’s books that she’s published, I knew I had to get them for my little girl.

We met in leafy Wimbledon Village when she visited the UK, her old hometown and where I happened to live by too! We had a gorgeous Sunday brunch and chatted like we’ve known each other for years! Isn’t that amazing when you chance upon a stranger and feel like you’re already friends for long?

She passed a beautiful package to me of her two books and some other little “My Mummy Loves’ gifts. I cannot believe how super attractive her books are! These books, I have to say, are probably one of the rare books I would like for myself as an adult!

I purposely packed these books aside for our move to Spain, thinking we’ll be away for a bit and I wanted some attractive books to keep 6-year-old Ayla’s attention. We’ve had so much fun focusing on each page and discussing the way she’s painted each item, besides reading the words. Every book has a little fun activity for you and your little one to do. (The more I read them, the more fascinated I am with each bag/shoes she’s drawn!)

Here are some pages to share with you so you can see why this mummy wishes these books were hers! 😉

Here’s a little interview with Clare:

1) Where does the inspiration for the books come from?
I’ve always been mad about shoes and bags from a very early age (a hint in the titles of the books!). When my first daughter Sienna was born, I thought how lovely it would be to read a book to her all about shoes and bags and the journey the mother and daughter would go on to find them. It took me until she was 7 to finally realize my dream and self-publish my first book, ‘My Mummy Loves Shoes’.
2) Will there be another my mummy loves book (makeup/perfume bottles etc)?
I’d love there to be another book in the Mummy Loves series, but life as a recently single mum and my styling and influencer work takes up most of my time. I have sketched a few pages for ‘My Mummy Loves Hats’, and have the draft story done, It’s just finding those extra hours in the day to sit down and illustrate!
3) What are your plans for the future?
There are many exciting projects on the horizon. I’ve just finished a bespoke illustration for the personal shopper at Selfridges, London for him to give to his clients. Creating something for one of my favourite department stores was a dream. I’m currently working on logo designs for a luxury dog boutique based here in Auckland. I’m so pleased with the designs so far. I’m taking part in the Pink Star Walk in a couple of weeks (sponsored by Estée Lauder) that raises awareness for breast cancer. The day after the event I fly to Queenstown to work on a four-day styling job. It’s busy juggling work and life with my amazing children but that’s how I love it!

If you are a fashion mama who wants to pass on the love of beautiful shoes and bags through exquisitely hand-painted books, or just want to get to know more of Clare’s work, do visit her site: http://www.my-mummy-loves.com/

What’s Behind These Andalusian Spanish Doors? Come Inside!

0
What's Behind This Door?

Have you travelled around Europe and seen how you can drive through small, cobbled alleys?

I’ve always wondered when we used to drive through France and Italy, what’s behind those doors. Now that we have ‘gently’ moved to Southern Spain, it’s even more interesting to see these doors and get a glimpse of the people going in and out of them.

It was my husband’s idea to do this particular Sunday Vlog. He said, if we have wondered ourselves, maybe there are others who would love to know to. So here it is. Come through the keyhole!

Lorena Öberg London Treatments Review: Gentle Transformation Fit for a Goddess

0

As some of you may know, I come from a culture where beauty is more than skin deep. My mother and grandmother, who are Indonesians by birth and heritage, are big on natural remedies and holistic health. I was taught from very young to love and appreciate my body and my health and this is one reason why many Indonesian women, especially in Java, are known for their slim and youthful looks.

The Javanese culture is all about using as natural as possible an ingredient to keep the skin smooth, the body supple and our internal organs ‘clean’. Massage and self-care are hugely important to my culture.

Having said all that, that doesn’t mean I’m opposed to anything not considered “natural” as Botox or liposuction should I find the day where I feel I really need it. I told myself a long time ago, I won’t say no to that help but I’ll hold on for as long as possible with as much natural treatment as I can. Being a goddess to me is about first and foremost, looking after yourself, physically, mentally and emotionally. We need to be happy with what we’ve been given and appreciate the things we’ve done and only then figure out how to make it better.

When I first heard of Lorena Öberg and her treatment, I was very intrigued. She was primarily famous for her “DermaEraze” which is a treatment that gets rid of stretch marks and hyperpigmentation.

I was offered to meet her and try out her treatments for a review. I thought about what it was that I wanted to try but I was honest with her that I didn’t want to get rid of my stretch marks. My pregnancy stretch marks are very minimal to me plus it serves as a reminder to myself that I have been pregnant multiple times and I have given birth to miracle babies.

The Consultation

I came to see her in mid-Aug (when I was at the beginning of my stressful international move period) and we had a good thorough chat. We laughed as there wasn’t really anything I was concerned with or felt needed treatment urgently. Though I was keen to try something in the name of ‘science’ interest and review for my lovely readers and followers. We decided that I would try out her PDO Thread Lift which is great for someone in her 40’s like me (even though Lorena commented that I have very good skin structure for my age).

“PDO thread lift is a procedure that involves the insertion of a blunt-tip cannula with very fine absorbable polydioxanone threads into the skin or the subcutaneous fat of the specific areas to be treated”

Dr. Sylvia Ramirez,
I am very familiar with this treatment as it came out of Korea many years ago and it’s highly popular in South East Asia whereby it’s less invasive nature meant it’s hugely cheaper than going for a full facelift. I didn’t mind trying this for my whole face as not only am I in the middle of moving to Marbella, I reckon I could handle many, many needles in my face rather than going under the knife for a major surgery.

How It Works

The tension in the PDO threads will provide a lifting effect by pulling the skin together. The effect will be tightening of sagging skin, especially in the brows, jawline, neck, and décolleté.

Once the suture threads are introduced into the skin, it triggers the human skin’s natural self-healing abilities. You will be surprised at your skin’s ability to naturally heal itself.  What happens is that your skin will gently react to the PDO threads and an inflammatory reaction is induced, resulting in collagen formation around each thread inserted into the skin.

The healing process strengthens the skin and is further enhanced by the increase in blood flow to the dermis. When the threads dissolve in the months following the procedure, the bundles of collagen that were formed will keep the skin tight, supple, and rejuvenated.

Lorena also recommended I try her Laser Lipo when I told her because of my thyroid disorder, I have trouble shifting some stubborn pockets of fats near my midriff. For this treatment, I had to go carb free 48 hours before and after treatment in order to make it work even better.

Lorena will use the “DermaLipo” on me which uses warmed up paddles, where the multiple low-level lasers pull the triglycerides from the fat cells, shrinking them and leaving them unharmed. She reminded me (and of course you) that this doesn’t replace exercise and it is not meant for a massive weight loss. This is great for inch loss and on small areas of the body, much more targeted than general weight loss.

We agreed to meet a week later.

The Day of Treatment

I came on a Thursday late afternoon (a week after our consult and a month ago) and we went straight to work. Lorena put some “Emla” (an anaesthetic/numbing cream) on my face then cling wrapped it, leaving it to work.

Before that, we had taken all our before pictures for posterity! LOL.. I had taken my trousers and blouse off for her to work on my tummy and love handles for the Laser Lipo treatment.

While the Emla was slowly numbing my facial skin, Lorena got to work on my hard-to-shift-thyroidism-and-mum-tum flabs. She put some of her specially crafted oil and turned the paddle on to my left muffin top. It was plesantly warm and when she moved the paddle around, it reminded me of a vigorous hot stone massage.

Sorry for the blurry photo. Lorena’s hand was moving fast around my tummy and sides.

She worked on each sides for 15 mins. My skin was mildly pink/reddish when it was over and tingling warm. Nothing unpleasant and I didn’t feel anything untoward except a slight tightening.

When that was done, she wiped off all the oil on my abdomen region and put on her latex gloves to work on my mug. First she tested to see if I was completely numbed by lightly pricking me with a needle. I didn’t feel much and only knew she was doing something as it was right over my face.

Beware! Photos below are not for the squeamish.

Lorena does it such that the needles/threads make a criss-cross pattern on my cheeks. Much like building a netting, the way natural collagen works. I didn’t manage to take pictures of her inserting the needles above my eyebrows. Those 2 hurt a little more than I expected and I heard sort of a crunching sound as the needle was inserted. If there’s anything I’m not too keen on about my face is the fact that I feel my forehead is a little ‘sunken’ and can see the lines slowly rearing it’s ‘ugly’ heads.

By the time we were done doing my full face, I had started to swell up, as if I’ve been for a dental treatment. My skin had bled a little here and there. Lorena did warn that I might be swollen for a couple of days and will be bruised just as long. the is why I’m glad it’s a Thursday as I have the whole weekend to recover.

That evening, for me, my face was full on swollen and it was a tad tender. I just put some cold iced cloth on my cheeks to hel manage the swelling and the bruising.

2 days after the treatment, with carefully applied concealer and make up

My face was a tender for about a week and a bit. I guess my older age could also mean that I heal slower plus having so much stress about moving home couldn’t have helped the healing much.

I have to say after 1 month, all traces of the treatment are all gone, no swelling, no bruising, no needle marks. The most obvious changes, to my critical eyes, are the forehead area – no more impression of a sunken middle- and my nasolabial fold. That’s the lines next to your nose, by the cheeks. I tend to sleep on my right side and squish my cheeks hard there so I can see a slight difference now.

As for my muffin top, together with my good diet and my workouts, I’ve been even happier to wear my swimsuit recently. Here’s a set of photos from my recent visit to an outdoor spa.

I know the collagen will keep producing for a while more and with good skincare routine and my own anti ageing acupressure facial massage, I can keep the effect of this treatment for hopefully more than the average 2 years.

Lorena has kindly offered a special 10% discount for all readers of TheGoddessStyle website. Get in touch with her via her website

and quote Lorena10. This offer is valid for the next 1 month so it’s the perfect early Christmas present for all my goddesses looking for a little more natural perk-me-up.

1 month after, with less stress, and getting enough sleep and sunshine. Happy with the result.

*Disclosure: I have been given the treatment in exchange for an honest review. I would have been happy to pay for them, not least the threading treatment.

First of all, thank you so much to everyone of you who’ve been messaging me asking if my move went well. You all sent me your love and good wishes and it really humbled me.

I went offline for 1 week which is pretty much a long time for someone like me: a social, media loving woman. I thought a few days was enough to sort the move out but as they say, sometimes the best laid plans can go t*ts up.

Here’s my usual Sunday Live vlog sharing with you what has transpired in the last week. Hope you can share in the highs and lows of my week and if you haven’t subscribed to my channel yet, go on then, click HERE.

Update from Big News: Why We Are “Brexiting” from London

0
Feeling high on the mountain behind Marbella, Spain
So last week, you read about my big news announcement. Many of you were surprised but pleasantly happy for my family and me. This is a big decision and an international move is pretty high on the stress scale, right after death and divorce.
I got quite a few DMs/private message asking me for the reason why we are moving. One news (which I didn’t share in the vlog below) snowballed into more and we decided the main decision has to be the most important to us as a family of course.

We’ve been juggling our thoughts as a couple for the past 5 months, going through some tough times recently. It was not an easy time to come to this conclusion but a conclusion did we come to.

I hope you’ll be happy for me and my family. Wish us lots of luck and success in this new endeavour. With this decision, I hope to be an even more amazing professional life coach and therapist who’ll share her knowledge through blogging on this website and vlogging through YouTube. The Goddess Style Mum on the Daily Mail: You Can Sit With Us No Matter Who You Are

1

I was asked initially to share my story of being an ethnic minority mum in Nappy Valley where there are so many known Yummy Mummies. What was it like to be the different one? When I already always feel different growing up. It’s not any easier navigating social circles when you’re older and still the minority in your next city. I’m so blessed though through Instagram and careful navigation of it, I’ve met a few wonderful women who themselves are either foreigners like me or they are ethnic minorities and understand what it feels like to be lonely, sidelined and misunderstood.

Please join me in flourishing the net with the hashtag #YouCanSitWithUsUK or #YouCanSitWithUsUS #YouCanSitWithUsAU (change the location to suit your country code) to show that you are accepting diversity and wants to promote inclusivity. No matter someone’s colour, Social class or status. We are all bleeding the same red blood and we all hurt the same way.

Share love and kindness.

When Yoga Replaces Cuddling in Public

Being a mother means understanding that your children are never really your own. They belong to the world so the best thing we can do is prepare them for that world in which they will ultimately belong.

Yet, as someone who loves being a mum and spending time with her kids (no matter how much they annoy her at times!) I know my time with them is precious. While they live in our house with us, we can demand their attention but when they leave home… Their time with you is like rain on a summer’s day. It comes and goes whenever it does. A lot of time, sparingly.

My eldest is a proper teenager. Being a teenager means there’s no more cuddling in public. She gets a little embarrassed when I give her too much attention. Like PDA by new couples is not always welcomed, she doesn’t want mummy’s eager kisses and hugs in public either. Can’t blame her! Haha..

So I thought about what are the ways I can spend precious, quality time with my teenager without embarrassing her and still instil strong values in her?

The answer was joint yoga sessions. She used to come to my classes when I was teaching my Belly Dance Therapy and even did shows for me. That time is now over and yoga is hopefully our replacement. We attended our first yoga sessions as ‘adults’ this week. (Read here how Adeena bought me a yoga session as a birthday gift with her own money when she was very young.)

As someone who’s practised gentle yoga for more years than she’s been around, it was nice to be next to my daughter and help guide her where the instructor has missed. It was also nice to encourage her to keep going where she thinks she can’t go on. And then it was hilarious when we both failed to achieve the headstand asana.

Our instructor happened to be a heavily pregnant mama herself. I loved this discovery. I have always maintained that it’s important for girls, as young as possible, to be surrounded by imageries of strong, independent ‘kick a**’ women to instil their own sense of pride in their sexuality. Being pregnant didn’t stop me from teaching my own classes till I was 38 weeks pregnant (had to stop when I went into labour!) and it is not stopping Cheryl either.

I hope to be able to do joint sporty activities with my daughters/son as much as possible. Today it’s yoga, tomorrow we might add rock climbing to the list. Heck, we have been talking about picking up horse riding again. Why not… Our time together is precious. We must grab every possible interactions and public ‘cuddling’ where possible!

Getting ready to walk to the local church hall where our new yoga sessions are held.

Practising our Warrior pose together. I hope my children will grow up to be defenders of the week and infirm.

Look up and see your bright future, daughter! You are meant to be one of the stars.. ❤

Cheryl, our local yoga instructor, who is 28 weeks pregnant with her baby no.2. It’s always inspiring for me to see pregnant women doing things as well, if not better, than women who are not pregnant.

Have you got your own mother-daughter/son bonding sessions? And is it a regular thing? I’d love to hear your own activities and how you feel it has made you closer to your child(ren). Comment below.

What It Means to Be Turning 40?

0
Looking up to the future

As I mentioned in my last post, my birthday came up on June 4th. I’m turning 40! I finally am no longer in my thirties. As a friend gently reminded me, I am actually entering my FIFTH decade (thanks!! Cough cough!). LOL…

The night before turning 40

The night before I turned 40, I actually had a little ‘meltdown’ truth be told. I had a long and emotional day and organising a last-minute birthday party for myself was taking its toll. I came home to find the children have all somehow disappeared. It actually pleases me to see all my children at home when I come home from work.

I cooked dinner and after yelling and asking the kids to set the table and to eat dinner a few too many times and getting no response, I lost it. I decided that I didn’t want to be angry with my kids. It makes me very tired and disappointed. I hate being angry with my kids. It’s a negative feeling and I don’t like negativity.

I ‘sulked’ in bed and decided that I should just meditate the evening away. Getting older is a tiring business it seems. So I fell asleep. Hubby came to get me and told me that the kids were sorry they made me angry and they were hiding as they were making me special homemade birthday cards. Cue feeling guilty now. Oohh….

I came down and cuddled the husband on the sofa. I wanted to write this blog post that night but my new business was on my mind. Writing on my blog means me needing to have clarity and calm. I like being honest and truthful and when you’re in a negative or tired space, it gets harder to find honesty.

So back to the question of:

What does it mean to be turning 40? For so many women, especially in the past, it means being over the hill. The kids would have been quite late in their teens and mummy is ready to take it a little easier. Well, I guess in today’s world, being 40 is completely different than it was before.

Besides having a soon to be 15 yr old teenager, I still have a 2 yr old toddler staying home and who still needs help going to the toilet. I still have some sleepless nights when the 2 younger ones fall ill.

40-year-olds today

Lots of 40-year-olds are conquering things and ambitions that used to be out of bounds for their female ancestors and many are just starting the family they envisioned having when they were in their 20s.

I personally know many more who are still living a full life and are women I greatly admire. Some are women I can call my friends.

Truth be told, I still don’t know what it means to be a 40-year-old. My body, to me, still feels like I could be in my late 20’s. Despite bearing 4 kids and having had tough pregnancies, and suffering from hypothyroidism, I still have the muscle strength from years of being a competitive athlete and a performer/dancer.

I have always thought that my mind is ‘old’ since I was young and when talking to people older than me, they always swore that I was decades older than my age. In that sense, I am glad that I finally am coming into the age group I have always been mistaken for. I have always loved being mistaken for an older person as I perceived to be getting more respect and wisdom.

I guess really, age is just a number. The joke used to be, “You’re as old as the woman you feel” for men as many tend to marry younger ones than them. So for me, it’s the activities that you do that determines how you perceive your age. And one activity that I love that helps me think young is going to music festivals. And I cannot wait for this year’s Glastonbury to come round.

This year too I thought I’ll indulge in a little narcissistic photoshoot. I hired someone whom I thought is a fabulous fashion photographer who’s work I have greatly admired for some time.

After losing some ‘hard to shift’  weight I gained from my disorder, I decided that this is probably the body and face I will have to appreciate for life.  I wanted this not just in my memories but also in person, in a photobook.

The shooting day came

Rushing in the morning after kids school drop off, I put on my ‘model makeup’ and ‘model hairdo’ and rushed to the agreed location to shoot a few outfits that I feel says a lot about how I feel about myself. I was very self-conscious and felt a little fake in the beginning. The photographer, Igor Fain, did a very good job of making me feel really comfortable and like a real model. Thank you, Igor!!

And to those reading, please let me indulge you in the few hours I could imagine, being a model. A model who forgot for a few hours she was turning 40. I thoroughly enjoyed myself and I hope you too, reading this.

P.S I seriously suggest every mother find an opportunity to do a photoshoot like this. It really helps to open up your eyes to see your beauty from another’s perspective. Find the best photographer you can and get that photoshoot going. If you’re in London (or any location I am at) and need help transforming yourself to the Goddess Mum you really are, email me. I’m happy to help!

The Decade that Prepared me for my New Life

0

1 month to the beginning of the end.

I’m writing this post exactly on 4th May 2015. The first day of the last month of my last decade before it becomes the new.

In exactly a month, I’ll be entering my next decade. My fifth decade. I’ll be turning 40. Oh boy, this may make me sound like I’m reluctant to grow older or admit my age proudly. The truth is, I don’t know how a soon-to-be 40 is supposed to feel. All I know is that I still feel 25. The age I first got married to my soulmate and then became a mother for the first time. It’s like time has almost stood still for me in my heart. I still feel youthful.

But of course it’s a different story everywhere else. Now I’m going to recount my life for the past 10 years and be accountable for it. The lessons, the pain, the happiness and the joy. The decade that I really feel has taught me a lot and to prepare for what I think will be an even more exciting decade to come.

Physical:

I’ve been pregnant 4 times this decade and have given birth to 3 beautiful children. I’ve also pushed my body to its limit with each pregnancy. I don’t know why I do it but each time I do, maybe it’s to prove to my husband and myself, that I’m no passenger in this marriage of life. I’ve taught too many exhausting belly dance and fitness classes with Baby no.2. We bought and ‘double-handedly’ rebuilt 2 houses during both my Baby no.2 and no.3 pregnancies. I carried too many heavy loads of tile glue and machinery and what not to built what I deemed were our dream homes. I cried myself to sleep so much during those times when the body finally could let its screams of tiredness be heard.

I also went under the knife for the first time in my life after baby no.3, not for the cosmetic surgery I presumed I might one day consider. It was for a potential life-saving and altering surgery on my neck. It was to remove a cyst inside that has been growing bigger over the years to the point where they had to remove part of my tongue, my hyoid bone and the right side of my thyroid and most of my left. A 30 min surgery turned into 4 hrs and a day stay in the hospital turned into a week. My body learnt the meaning of perseverance having to breastfeed a young baby with various tubes across my body while in extreme pain. This is also the beginning of my lifetime, life-changing disorder: hypothyroidism. For the rest of my life, I will have to depend on some tiny pills to get back some functions you and I never used to think about. I gained weight I thought a fit and exercise loving person like me never would. I have thinning hair and brittle nails to fight from this decade on. All these have been easy.

Mental:

This is the harder part of this decade. I know I am a mentally strong person yet I have to admit, I had 3 episodes of depression and mental breakdown. My version.

After baby no.2 I came down with Post-Natal Depression 2 months after the rosy days. Maybe it was living in a house of horror (renovation was ongoing, we were living in a tent in our garden in England) that got to me but I remember crying and running into the car with the overwhelming desire to end my life that night. It was my husband’s swift decision to run after me and pull the key out that saved me. He couldn’t decide if I was being overly emotional or just dramatic. I told my health visitor that things were rosy still yet I was furiously reading up on this issue. I knew what I was feeling wasn’t normal of me.

The second episode of depression came with baby no.3’s pregnancy. It was winter in the Netherlands and it rained non-stop for 3 whole months. We were again renovating a house we just bought. I wasn’t sure if it was purely SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder) but I knew better the signs this time. I confided in another expat life coach my feelings and made her aware to check on me. There were days when I just wanted to lie in bed crying yet I had 2 children to take care off and clients to see. My thoughts were as grey as the days. I tried really hard to stop the negative thoughts from permeating my headspace. A UV light board I convinced the husband would make the best Xmas present to me became my best friend at home. It went everywhere I went in the house. Things only got better when the weather improved, the house looked more ready and it seemed to disappear when I made a crazy decision to return to my homeland to deliver baby no.3.

When things were looking up in my life, depression came again 3 yrs ago, courtesy of a contraceptive, an unplanned pregnancy and the lack of Vitamin D and the as-yet-undiagnosed hypothyroidism. It took my very sympathetic and very patient French GP in our next land of expatriation to deliver the news to me. He made me realised that my past health professionals have all failed me. The contraceptive’s side effects and my severe deficiency in Vitamin D coupled with the newly discovered hypothyroidism all can cause depression yet it was the unplanned pregnancy with baby no.4 that made it worse. Not only was I not expecting to be pregnant when my career was taking a turn for the better, but it was also the prospect that baby might never make it, made it all even bleaker.

I had an 11 yr old daughter whom I was supposed to be homeschooling due to our rural location yet there were so many days that the osteoporosis syndrome (brought on also by the Vit D deficiency) made me just want to slinker away and slip off into oblivion. What is there left to celebrate when you are told your baby’s chance of survival was only 20%?

The silver lining on this dark cloud was that I had just graduated as an NLP Master Practitioner. I knew the signs even better this time around and I had ‘tools’ to help hypnotise and trance myself into positivity. I can safely say NLP saved my sanity this time around. Though on hindsight I realised I should have seen a mental health professional anyway instead of trying to be strong for everyone. This time, I was served the ‘triple whammy’, that I see now my decision to insist the family move back to Asia was my muddled brain talking and not the rational me. I wouldn’t have made that decision had I been a different person talking.

Statistics say 3 out of 4 pregnancies will have the mother suffering some form of depression. Be it mild or severe. Well, I’ve been that statistic. 3 different forms of depression with 3 of the 4 pregnancies. Yet I’m thankful. I’ve learnt so much of this feeling and this ‘disease’ and the stigma associated with it. It has actually helped me be a better coach and counsellor to my clients. I have walked in their shoes.

Motherhood:

As you know now, I was only prepared to be a mum to 3. Not 4. I conceived my no.2 a month after losing an earlier pregnancy in the 1st trimester. I had morning sickness for all of 6 months and couldn’t even smell the kitchen less it brought on a bout of fresh pukes. I only could eat between the hours of 3-5 am (yes AM as in the early morning) and developed severe lactose intolerance during those 6 months. I lost so much weight during those 6 months that I was referred to a specialist. And when my appetite came back, I could only eat mangoes and some fruits.

With every 4 of my pregnancies, I also developed very low blood pressure and low glucose level. I used to have fainting spells with no.3 that the German midwife in Holland would prescribe me ‘medical grade sugar packs’ to carry in my handbag.

As you know the story of my no.4, her labour pushed my limits of pain tolerance to the maximum. 4 days of ongoing labour contractions before she made her appearance, taught me that a woman in labour really is a superhero in disguise!

I love my kids to death. I’ve recognised that they’re all their own individuals and as unique as each of their own conception places. Singapore, England, The Netherlands and Italy. I would move mountains to see my children happy and flourish in their own space. That was one reason for me to decide to move to Asia as I can see I couldn’t satisfy my eldest daughter in her educational needs at home. As an Asian mum, their education is very important to me yet I’ve learnt as a Scandinavian spouse, that education takes a back seat to general learning. It’s all about their enthusiasm.

I insist my kids go to bed every night at their prescribed early hour and a story must be read before saying good night. I don’t have a dream I want my children to live to except they find their own talent and passion and be kind to others around them.

I have also learnt that despite my children being important to me, I’m more important than them. Yes, I need to look after no.1 so no.1 can look after 5. You may not agree with me but my experience on this last 10 years has confirmed this ideology. A happy mummy makes happy children.

I have also discovered that I enjoy extended breastfeeding all 4 children despite thinking as a singleton that 2 months was plenty. Breastfeeding suited the lazy me. Yeah, lazy to me is not having to worry about bringing extensive kitchen collection just to bring the baby out of the door. All I needed for the baby can be contained in my designer handbag.

I have also learnt what it is to suffer watching your children suffer. My no.2 had severe tonsillitis every month at age 1.5 with 2 weeks fever (and rapid weight loss) that came with it. It broke my heart to see her having to go for surgery at age 2.5 to fix the problem. I felt sorry for no.3 when I found out he had intestinal egg allergy meaning he could just watch his siblings eat all the nice cakes and cookies. I learnt feeling guilty that my no.1 had undiagnosed (mild) scoliosis discovered at the late age of 11.

I’m still learning as a mother. People used to say you parent just as your own do. I can see that I’m becoming like my mother in this sense: I’m extremely happy to have my children bring their friends home and I get to cook and feed them and get to know them better through their friends.

I still think of myself as a full-time mum who just happens to have her own business and wants to grow her own passion for her own life’s purpose.

Spiritual:

I used to hate parts of my school life yet I discovered I thoroughly enjoy learning. Learning to the mind is like what food is to the body. It is part of my spiritual growth. I feel a little strange if I don’t try to learn something new every day.

I have ‘secured’ a few more educational titles to my name in this last 10 years. I guess it was all a slow progression to achieving my life’s purpose. As much as I loved performing and teaching belly dance as a form of therapy, I knew I couldn’t sustain the love for it if I kept going further. In the course of my work as a certified holistic therapist (having gained those different therapy diplomas) most people with physical pain are actually suffering from mental and spiritual anguish. This was the reason why I knew I had to upgrade myself to becoming a certified Life Coach and Master Neuro-Linguistic Practitioner. It became the natural progression that my spirit and mind were looking for.

With all the houses we’ve bought and fixed up, I’m glad that the ‘stingy’ me who doesn’t want to pay expensive workmen meant I’ve successfully learnt to do tiling (bathrooms and kitchen and floor), some plastering, electrical work (did my own bathroom underfloor heating and lighting) and professional spray painting. All these physical learning has also flourished my spirit. I realised that men don’t have to be the master of this domain and that women can be just as good! (judging by the disbelieving look of our Moroccan electrician when seeing the finished work in the bathroom!) I wished more women discover these strength about themselves.

I have also learnt to forgive my own past transgression towards myself and others in my life. I have truly decided that I can only be kind and peaceful to others if I ever hoped to see more kindness and peace in this world. This was also the decade I decided to speak more intimately with a God I believed in. I decided to ‘abandon’ religion and seek faith. This is one of the reasons why I am always optimistic and cheerful- my faith asks me to only share love and peace.

I am still learning what it means to be a good friend, sibling, wife and mother. Every day, every year, learning opportunities present themselves to me. I also believe I am lucky. Lucky to me is recognising when opportunities present themselves and to strike when the iron is hot.

Now:

This decade has seen me living in so many different cities and countries all over the world and in just as many more homes. I really am thankful for all the people and opportunities that have been part of my third decade. This decade has really prepared me to start my new company 7th Tribe Pte Ltd. I will be working with others who want to become peaceful and happy Global Citizens, just like myself.

I pray that God will keep the lines of communication open with me. I pray that I will always keep knowing when opportunities are presenting themselves to me. I hope that my health will be as good as I can imagine it to be and that my mind will stay sane in the insanity of this world.

Have you also gone through something similar to what I’ve gone through? I would love to hear your thoughts down here!

Much love….

Why My Life is Like a Box of Chocolates- Happiness Part 2

0

I didn’t like that I stopped being consistent in showcasing a video a week on my YouTube channel. I wanted to get back into the regularity but without any help at home, I became a little overwhelmed with the amount of work coming my way.

I recorded this episode 2 weeks ago but been having issues to post in online. Anyway, 2 days ago, an iconic Singaporean and world leader passed on. Mr Lee Kuan Yew or affectionate known as LKY, died of old age. My bereavement just continued. I couldn’t be any sadder. Just like my father in law, they were both father to many people. Both have lessons for many people who’s lives they have touched. Be it good or bad.

Let me know what you think of this life lesson that I’ve learned. Can you adopt this lesson too?

Social Media EQ for Parents and Kids- 8 Top Tips

0
group of photos showing kids on mobile phones and latop

Are you a parent like me who’s worried about the climbing rate of social media usage amongst our kids? Have you ever heard of EQ (Emotional Intelligence) as a part of modern psychology? Let me share with you my expertise as a certified EQ Coach in regards to social media usage for your children.

Recap:

1) Social Media is NOT social life.

Please remind our kids about face-to-face socialising. Personal interactions are very important in character building and in their future social and professional life. Social interactions is the building block of a mature EQ (Emotional Intelligence) character. Please allow them also the opportunity to spend time with friends, probably under your guidance. And lead by example. You, as a parent, must also show that your own social interactions are important to you.

2) Celebrities and personalities are NOT our friends.

It does get exciting for a young person to be able to interact with someone who in ‘our’ time would be difficult to get in touch with. AT the click of a keypad, they are suddenly ‘pally’ with their favourite stars or personalities. Just because they are polite enough to reply, remind them they shouldn’t assume they can cross the line and talk to these stars like they’ve known them intimately.

3) NOTHING is private or secret once it’s typed and you have pressed ‘Publish’.

Many people, young and old alike, mistakenly believe that they can hide behind a persona or a fake profile, and say things they would never say in person to someone else. Remind our children: Always remember to only write and post what can be defended if ever it comes to a court of law – it has happened and will continue to happen, as long as there are lawyers practising law.

4) Be aware of online trolls.

These are people whose online ‘job’ is to incite hatred and ‘flame’ others into reacting negatively and really unnecessarily. Your kids will be goaded into online heated discussions and before they know it, they are being bullied into something beyond what is deemed normal discussion. Don’t get into an online war of words with these trolls. It is just a waste of time. Tell your kids their time should be more preciously spent than spending it with people who really have no interest in calm, intelligent discussions with them.

5) Be aware of paedophiles or online “groomers”.

This is a very, very sensitive topic but it must be discussed by responsible parents. There is such a thing as online grooming and it’s a growing problem. A lot of these people (mainly men based on current data) will assume the persona of a young person of similar age as their ‘target’. They are not who they claim they are. These men (most of them) are patient enough to spend months and months gaining the trust of their young prey. They might send gifts to your child, and they will certainly look for ‘chinks’ in your child’s confidence armour to strike later. Teach your children to watch out for inappropriate questions and suggestions. As mentioned, a lot of these interactions will happen in private messages, rarely on public walls or open tweets.

6) Be aware too, of the inappropriate acting ‘friend’.

These are typically teenagers or other youths they might have come into contact with either through school or social activities. And because they are of similar age, your children’s guards could be down. Remind them of the important aspect: no sending of photos that they can regret later. These days you have apps like Snapchat, which they think are safe as the photos or videos ‘self-destruct’ after it’s been read by the intended recipient. Sadly there are also apps (anti-Snapchat) that can save these supposedly ‘safe’ options.

7) Never send out or share intimate photos!

Photos can be and have been used to intimidate or bully the sender into doing more and other inappropriate things. Suddenly your child is a blackmail victim. Please remind our children that their body is a temple. It is and should be a sacred place. Only at the right moment and with the right person should it be revealed (which you would agree will come much later). This again comes back to you parents having a frank heart to heart talk to your kids about the birds and the bees; the emotional version.

8) Be aware of the words we use online.

When we meet someone in real life, we have to remember that first impressions are made up of 55% of our visual presentations, 38% our body language and only 7% of our words. So in the absence of vocal tones and body language, we are left with just our words to be judged on. Even though I don’t agree with judging people by just a few simple words they write online, especially someone we don’t know, many people do judge.

A simple sentence like ‘why do you do that?’ can be negatively or positively taken. It all depends on the mood and personality of the person reading their posts. How the person perceives our words online has more to do with them than us. Please let your children know about this important aspect. Lots of adults still make the mistake of taking a lot of posts online personally when they are not. If adults make this mistake, how can we expect children to know better?

The last words

This is an updated blog post as I’m very concerned about the rise of negative stories involving very young children and the youth today. From self-harm to suidice due to severe trolling, this is a subject we need to keep talking about more openly.

The internet still needs more regulating and until that happens, it’s up to us parents to keep our children safe. Safe from potential harm. All we need is to give them the tools to keep themselves safe.

If this topic has greatly moved you or made you think, there are lots of resources out there for you. I am also happy for you to get in touch with me if you have more questions. I am passionate about Emotional Intelligence (EQ) and it is underrated as a tool for life’s success. Email me here: coach@arnierozahkrogh.com

I am available for personal or group coaching and also workshops.

Quick Recipe for Busy Mums- Prawn Pesto Pasta with Grilled Tomatoes

15

I haven’t done a recipe sharing in a long while so here it is- my go-to yummy pasta recipe when I am tired, rushed and uninspired to make a whole gourmet meal.

Never tried pesto? What is it?

Pesto is made from Basil leaves normally. As I mentioned in the video, you can find other types in the market too. From tomatoes based to aubergine to red peppers, added with coriander to other spices. I love the traditional ones best.

I am amazed that the Asda one contains more basil than the name brand (Sacla) jar. So really, it has been proven that it is not necessary to always buy name brand to get better ingredients. At the end of the day, always remember to read the labels/ingredients list.

Steps to making the dish

My routine when making this is:

  1. First boil water for the pasta. (In this video, I was using Asda brand Gluten-Free fusili).
  2. Cook the pasta, preferably the quick cooking ones. They take about 5 mins (or less for the egg pasta) to cook.
  3. When the pasta is cooking, wash tomatoes, prep them (lots of olive oil, sprinkle marine salt and some pepper) and then bung them in the oven on top grill/fan oven setting (220C). Grilled tomatoes, depending on your preferred end result, can take anywhere from 20-45 mins. I prefer mine very roasted and quite caramelised.
  4. Once those 2 are going, get the prawns and garlic ready.
  5. Heat the olive oil for the dish in a (preferably) thick-bottomed non-stick/iron pan.
  6. Gently fry the garlic on medium-low fire. Don’t let it get brown.
  7. In the meantime, the pasta is ready. Drain, rinse in cold water and add olive oil to stop it sticking. Then stick it in the chiller section of the fridge. Why? Because… *read below*
  8. By now, the garlic is softened and is very fragrant. Add the prawns to the pan and gently raise the heat.
  9. Once the prawns are a beautiful orange colour (a sign that they are thoroughly cooked)- which should take no more than 3-4 mins- lower the fire to the lowest setting and add the pesto from the jars.
  10. While the pesto warms up in the pan, prepare the condiments, cheese (assuming you love Parmesan as we do), set the table and get kids ready to sit.
  11. Take the cold pasta out of the fridge and warm it up again in the microwave.
  12. Prepare the dish, garnish it the way I do (or your own style) and serve!!

Voila!

This is a dish that is always welcomed in our house. A lot of the times you’ll see me frying the prawns’ heads together with the garlic to release the juices from them. It makes the sauce taste more seafood-y (?). You know you’re an Asian when you do that! LOL!

Now your turn!

Do tell me what you think of this dish, to those who have never made it before. If you did try, do share how else you made it interesting for your family. I’d love to hear from you. Oh and please do SUBSCRIBE to my website and my YouTube channel so you’ll get notified every time I post an article or vlog. Cheers!!

According to an experiment on the BBC show Trust Me, I’m a Doctor, eating pasta that has been cooked, cooled, and then reheated is significantly healthier than eating it freshly cooked because it turns into “resistant starch,” reducing blood glucose levels by half.

Normal starch in bread and pasta turns into sugar quickly when it is digested. The tangled chains of glucose sugar molecules in normal starch are easily broken down into single sugar molecules and then quickly absorbed, according to HyperPhysics, hosted by the Department of Physics and Astronomy at Georgia State University. Dieters are advised to stay away from these foods because if the sugar isn’t burned off, it is turned into fat and leads to a spike in blood glucose levels.

Dr. Denise Robertson, a senior nutrition scientist from the University of Surrey in England believes if you cook and cool pasta down, the body will begin to treat it more like a fiber than a starch. It does this by creating a smaller sugar rise and feeding the good gut bacteria. Eating cold pasta will also lead to less absorption of calories. – Quote: MedicalDaily.com

I Was Feeling “Meh” for Weeks Then I Changed One Habit. Can You Too Find Yours?

12

As you can see from my vlog, I’ve been feeling overwhelmed but somehow underwhelmed at times. It’s what you call ‘feeling out of sorts’. That is the feeling when someone asks you how you’re feeling, all you can imagine replying is ‘…meh..’.

The kind of feeling that if left unchecked can slowly lead to depression. But before that, it can leave you feeling colourless, devoid of music and vitality.

This topic must have resonated with lots of my fellow social media followers as my recent post on my Instagram account about it, garnered quite a few private messages and a lot more ‘saves’ than my usual posts.

The key to getting out of that funky ‘meh’ feeling is to recognise it quickly, i.e. your trigger(s). Then find the one thing that can help you get over it. If you watch my vlog, you’ll know what my one easy solution was.

I hope you are doing fantastic this week. If you are not, remember it’s OK to not be ok. It’s normal to feel down once in a while. What is not good is to keep quiet about it and to be afraid to ask for help.

Remember that there are many people out there who are capable to help you out of your funk. If you’re too shy to speak to a close friend, then I am available to speak to you as your life coach and mental health therapist.
