10 REASONS TO VISIT BLUEDOT FESTIVAL

With only a few weeks to go until Bluedot Festival, if you’re still thinking about heading to Jodrell Bank from the 18th – 22nd July, it’s not too late to grab some tickets still. With an incredible line-up and a variety of things to do, Bluedot Festival 2019 might just be the best year yet.

Bluedot’s versatile line-up is the perfect place to spend your weekend. Whether you’re looking for something to do with your other half, friends or family here’s why Bluedot Festival shouldn’t be missed…

1. Amazing headliners
This year headliners include Hot Chip, Kraftwerk (who are performing their 3D tour as a UK exclusive and I’m looking forward to the song I linked). 80’s legends New Order (a big hooray from my husband who’s an 80’s boy!), will be closing the festival on Sunday night! Plus tons of other artists and DJ’s set to perform across the weekend.

2. Enjoy fascinating talks with Britain’s First Astronaut
Helen Sharman became the first British Astronaut (AND the FIRST woman on the Mir space station) in May 1991 when she launched on a Russian Soyuz spacecraft. She then spent 8 days orbiting the Earth. In her Dot Talk, she will share her fascinating experience from land to air to space.

There will also be a selection of other talks from Liz Bonnin (TV presenter and biologist), Extinction Rebellion (climate and biodiversity movement) and Professor Jim Al-Khalili (famed TV presenter and physicist).

3. Celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the Moon Landing
Bluedot Festival is all about science and cosmic culture, so there’s nowhere better to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the moon landing than Bluedot itself! There will be various opportunities to celebrate all things space. This includes the chance to stargaze alongside cosmic experts. They will be on hand to guide you through the nights’ sky.

I can assure you watching the planets and stars from a professional telescope is truly amazing! Last year I almost hyperventilated when I got to see the rings of Saturn! Mars was bright red last year during this period.

4. Bluedot’s Sustainabilty Programme
The great thing about Bluedot is their passion for the environment. They’re always working to create a more sustainable space for festival goers. This year they have introduced a new sustainability programme for 2019. All of our wristbands will be made from recycled materials. They’ve also banned single-use plastics and also introduced a cycle scheme where festival attendees can ride their bikes canal side to Jodrell Bank. Hooray to this initiative!

5. Family-friendly Atmosphere
Not only does Bluedot cater to adults, it also caters really well for the little ones! For those aspiring scientists or cosmic explorers, there will be a selection of intergalactic family areas which are full of cool science shows and hands-on activities. This is including the opportunity to make your own waxwork alongside Aardman, the creators of Wallace and Gromit! My children are certainly looking forward to this bit!

They also thoroughly enjoy the many ‘exploding’, slimy, sandy, wacky and fun experiments available throughout these 3 days. For those kids who are into their Minecraft etc, my 2 younger ones love the robotics and coding section.

6. Iconic Setting for a Festival
Bluedot is held in the beautiful location of Jodrell Bank, in Macclesfield. For over 70 years, it has been a world-leading science institute, exploring and understanding the Universe. Who wouldn’t want to dance the night away under the iconic setting of the Lovell telescope, all lighted up in dancing lights?

7. Great Value for Money
Compared to other festivals which I equally love, Bluedot is extremely affordable! Full weekend tickets are priced at £189.25 and children’s weekend tickets start from £27.50. This means it’s a great opportunity to enjoy music, science and exploration activities together as a family.

8. It’s Suitable for Everyone
Whether you’re a lover of science, music or arts and culture, Bluedot festival accommodates everyone. For lively panel discussions, head over to the number of Dot Talks which are led by a number of industry professionals. The talks are so interesting, that queues were snaking around the tent last year!

For live performances, pay a visit to the Contact venue. We’ve had so much fun watching some crazy performers and laughed our bellies out with some comedians. For those looking to get your hands dirty, there’s plenty of interactive science experiments to get involved with. For the music lover, sing your heart out and dance your feet away to some top headliners.

9. Cashless Payments
This year, Bluedot has introduced their BluedotConnect, a cashless alternative to payments at the festival. Your wristband will enable you to pay in all the bars and stalls, as well as being able to log in to DotTalks and performances.

You can also create a bespoke ‘Misson Log’ which will log your entire weekend and content/highlights will be sent to you after the festival, so you can explore beyond the festival weekend. This, I’m looking forward to experiencing as a yearly thing.

10. BBC Sounds as a Partner
Bluedot have announced their partnership with BBC Sounds for the entire weekend. ‘6 Music’ presenters Shaun Keaveny and Radcliffe & Maconie will be bringing their shows to the festival, featuring live music performances, artists interviews and guests hosts.

BBC Education is also attending the festival and will be capturing the careers of people in the music industry for BBC Bitesize. Along with BBC Music Introducing, Bitesize will highlight the many and varied careers on offer in the music industry today.

BBC North West will be filming at Bluedot for an episode of regional current affairs series Inside Out which will celebrate the role Jodrell Bank and the Lovell Telescope played in the historic Apollo Moon Landing 50 years ago. This film will be broadcast on BBC One and BBC iPlayer later in the year.

Bluedot Festival truly is not to be missed this summer! There are still last-minute tickets available which can be purchased at https://www.discoverthebluedot.com

Ar’nie Krogh aka The Goddess Style mum

This festival is where I have camped next to a mental health nurse and a professor of zoology. I have also jostled in the crowd with a green-haired punk, who turned out to be the head engineer for Rolls Royce Aviation engine! I have had many an interesting talk with a rasta-haired, glitter-covered young man who I found out was doing a PhD in quasars and pulsars!

Check out my earlier blog post about my personal experience last year coupled with a YouTube vlog of that fun weekend. Click the link here for 2018 Bluedot Festival with my family.

Here are some pictures from last year to entice you to come join me!

Expat Goddess Reminisces Eid/Hari Raya

Today…

The first year being an expat in any new country is always the hardest. No, not when it comes to the excitement of exploring your new city/country but when it comes to celebrations.

Today is a big celebration day for many Muslims around the world. I celebrate what we call Hari Raya Aidilfitri (Eidulfitr’ Celebration Day) in places like Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia and Brunei.

This day marks the end of the month-long obligatory fasting for all Muslims. All Muslims all over the world celebrate this day differently. I really like how we celebrate it in Singapore though, where I grew up.

It is really like how Christmas can be or Chinese New Year’s celebration. Let me picture it for you.

My Memories

I grew up in a large village in Singapore and there were many of us who celebrated this feast. Things haven’t changed much today, except the kids are getting more jaded about the celebration compared to the youths of ‘my time’. As soon as the first day of Ramadan begins, everyone gets really excited about what will happen in 30 days time.

We start by making meals for the breaking of fast (iftar) and then mum would send me out with small bowls (to distribute) of whatever we made to the surrounding neighbours’ homes to share with them. By the end of the night, our meal would consist of 10 different dishes thanks to all the food from the neighbours.

We would start to prepare the house for the new season by painting, making new curtains, baking 10 or so different cookies and then going out to fabric shops to look for that one perfect material to make our family ‘baju kurung’ (literal meaning- containing clothes).

I would painstakingly draw out my special design to the tailor, repeating it a few times to make sure she knows exactly how I want to look like on Raya morning. All the girls and boys tend to wear the same colours/design in the family. So it was really easy to spot the family groups whenever we go out during the celebrating month.

The Big Day for Little Ones

As the big day draws nearer, kids especially would be very excited. There’s the ‘collection’ they can look forward to. The collection is the act of getting money in small packets, kind of like the Chinese Hong Baos (red packets). Money is given out to school going children as part of our zakat (charity).

All kids have to do is just go visiting families and friends houses with their parents or their own schoolmates, have a bite to eat, drink a glass of soda pop then shake the elder’s hand and voila! 😉 A small packet will appear during the said handshake. It’ll inevitably contain at least $2 or if you’re lucky, a larger amount!

When I was growing up, the amounts were much more modest, like 50 cents up to a dollar. I was a ‘champion’ collector, as I loved following my mum all over Singapore and Malaysia. I love visiting families and friends and getting to know them. You can do your collection for the whole month of Syawal!! (the month after Ramadan) I think we are the only ones who celebrate almost the whole month!

The Big Day

The big day of 1st Syawal is preceded by all of us staying awake to bake that last minute cake (mine is Chocolate Marble Cake), hang that newly made curtain, cook the traditional dishes like Beef Rendang (Indonesian Dry Coconut Curry), Lontong (slow cooked rice turned solid-like) and Sayur Lodeh (vegetables cooked in spices and coconut milk) and the ever-present sambal (fried ground chillies in spices).

Abah, my late grandfather would be busy making the last few pieces of ‘ketupat‘ (rice cooked in specially yarned young coconut leaves as pictured below). That’s an art I have yet to master! Some of us would hang more fairy lights to make our house as bright and as festive as possible.

The special food (riced) made from yarned young coconut leaves

In the background, Malay classical and modern music would be blasting from the radio to add to the cacophony of sounds in our house. But the most special sound I look forward to the most is the Taqbir/Takbeer. This is a special prayer/chanting at the end of the last prayer of the day. It sounds so soulful that it never fails to bring tears flowing to my eyes.

This taqbir will continue the next day after the optional Eid prayers. We would then have our family meal that’s been cooking through the night when all the males come home from the mosque,

After the lovely meal has been shared, in our new glorious best clothes, we would then do a special thing that I think is unique to the Muslims in South East Asia.

The kids/younger ones would then sit at the feet of their parents/elders, take their hands, bow their head and seek forgiveness. We seek forgiveness for our transgression for the past year, and there’s a rough formula to say it, translated it goes like this-

“I seek forgiveness from the bottom of my heart, from physical and soul. If I have eaten of yours by mistake or drank from yours by mistake, if I have used language that is rough to hear, please accept my apologies”.

Most of the time, husband and wives would seek forgiveness from each other than the children to those said parents. In general, younger ones would always seek the elders first.

This is also the time when most tears would be spilt. Especially when said sincerely, you do feel that you could have caused hurt to the other party, without realising it. Before life takes us/them away, enforced ‘sorry’ is never a bad thing, don’t you think?

Today

Anyway, back to why I feel that the first years are difficult when it comes to celebrations. You know no one in your surrounding area celebrates your feast the way you do. Heck, they may not even understand it!

Imagine how a Dutch family traditionally exchanges presents on December 5th (Sinterklaas). They then move to China where no one in their surrounding area understands their unique celebration with Sinterklaas and Zwarte Piet.

Everyone thinks, why are you exchanging presents NOT on Christmas Day? Before they can find other Dutch families to share this shared tradition, then they have to make do try to enjoy it with their own little family.

And that’s what I’m doing- I am spending it quietly with my little family in our tiny village here in Alsace. Having just arrived a little more than a month ago, we haven’t made any friends from ‘back home’ or haven’t had the chance to. I do not think it’s so bad that I’m spending my traditional day all ‘alone’.

What I feel is quite sad is that my children do not get much opportunity to experience the traditions I grew up with, the nuances of the culture I am proud of and the company of extended family members.

Of course, my 2 older kids think that by being perpetual expats, we are depriving them not of the traditional day per se but the ability to do ‘collection’!  Sigh…kids today eh?! 🙂

My Essential Travel Packing List for SE Asia

3

I love travelling! My excitement for travel already begins when I plan the trip. It continues as I make the list. It culminates as I pack all items into my suitcase/bags.

Though I wasn’t always this easy excited. No siree … I used to be pretty nervous before any trip. I used to worry that I might forget things. Things I might need or clothes I could have packed.

The more I travel, the more often I used a packing list and the more often I make a habit of it, the better it becomes.

I have discussed with other women, who like me, travel for both work and leisure. I asked them what apps they used (if any) and how they decide what to pack and what are their essentials for their packing list.

Some people used Excel sheets to plan, some used apps (as I mentioned in my video below) and some still use the old fashioned pen and paper.

Whatever you decide to use, here is my own essentials that I MUST have for my travels (back to SE Asia). If you have your own way of planning and travel packing essentials, do let me know in the comment below.

If you are still thinking of travelling somewhere soon, check out a quaint place in Southern Spain where we live. Here you’ll find the most unique an amazing tapas you’ll ever try!

Big Announcement: Rainbow Hair Going, Going, Gone!

0

Ahh… I can’t believe I’m finally doing this!!

Do you love my colourful, unicorn/rainbow hair?

What if I tell you I’ve made a decision to say goodbye to these crazy colours? Will you still love me tomorrow? ☺️

Well… a decisive decision I’ve made! A month before my birthday. A birthday which number means healing in numerology. I’ve decided to heal my hair and scalp.

I’m putting my health as my priority as always and this means my hair health too. As someone suffering from hypothyroidism, keratin production ain’t so hot in my physical system.

What now you ask?

Well, here’s my latest YouTube vlog explaining what’s happening. Tell me what you think.

(My recent post on Instagram where you can see the vibrancy of my rainbow colours)

19 Secrets To My 20 Years Relationship Happiness

Cheers to the next 19 years sweetheart!

I’m very happy to write this post on the day I celebrate my marriage to my husband on its’ 19th year. Sadly he isn’t by my side today. I’m celebrating in London with our 4 kids and he’s enjoying our proposed sushi dinner at what is our lunch hour.

I still cannot believe I’ve been with him for this long! Like seriously! I feel like he’s my party of life mate and we’ve only just begun. Of course, we’ve been together long, evidenced by our 18-year-old daughter.

Every time I look at our daughter, I had to blink a few times to believe this young lady is now officially an adult! And yet, she has 2 parents who still feel like a youth themselves!

I have decided to share my relationship ‘secrets’ or tips after 20 years of having fun with each other. Not only have we been asked many times what the secret is to our relationship, but also how we stay sane as parents of four.

I’m so lucky to also pick up lots of valuable lessons from various members of my “International Mixed Marriages’ group on Facebook. Many of whom are married for more than 30 or 40 years themselves. I have interviewed a few of them even for my “The Architect of Love” book (available on Amazon).

Also having worked with many singletons, many seems to think that soulmates don’t exist! And that there are some relationship secrets they haven’t been able to crack they think. The truth is, keeping a relationship alive and kicking takes more than just love. It’s hard work but the secrets are easy secrets. 😉

Enjoy my sharing with you.

Got Dark Under Eye Circles? Here Are Some Reasons Why and The Products I Use

0
under eye circle care, under eye bags, dark circles

So you’ve got dark under eye circles huh? Before you run off to buy the next make up touted to cover it best, watch my vlog here ?? first.

As a certified holistic therapist, I like to know the cause of the symptoms before I give advice to a client on how to fix them. This is so important as you can keep throwing solutions to a problem but it’s akin to throwing money to the wind until you really know how and why.

As someone who suffers from life long illness and one of the setback is having mild insomnia, I know dark under eye circles. Because I know the reason for my under eye circles, I now know much better how to deal with it.

Once YOU know the reason(s) for your own under eye circles, you can now better manage them. Be it through food management (if it’s food allergy for example) or through good makeup if you are genetically pre-disposed to them as mentioned in my vlog above.

Applying under eye concealer

The skin under the eye is the most sensitive and thinnest on our body. This is the reason why we have to take extra good care of it. Through a combination of good, healthy diet, good sleep, healthy exercise and good skincare, we are able to maintain the elasticity of this fragile skin.

And most importantly, whatever happens or how slow the dark circles seem to fade away, love yourself and your imperfections. There’s only one of you and that one set of skin around the eyes. Take good care of yourself, hug yourself everyday and look in the mirror and say “I am a Goddess!”

Big smile for your mirror, Goddess!

These are the products I mentioned using in my vlog above. (They contain affiliate links. It doesn’t cost you any extra to click on them but it means I might get a tiny % to keep this blog going if you do buy them.)

If you want to want to see how I clean my make up in the evening and do a little massage routine, read the blog post here: https://thegoddessstyle.com/my-evening-cleansing-and-anti-ageing-skincare-routine/

I mentioned about today being the anniversary of my life changing operation in the video. Click the link here if you want to read about it.
